The Cross and the Möbius Strip

I have chosen the Cross and the Möbius Strip as the symbol for Servant-Leader Associates. First, I must confess, I did not come to this image on my own. As many things are, it was a gift from God. It was an image I saw on a blackboard at Princeton Seminary. This image simply would not let go of me and finally it became clear that it was to be the foundation of the Servant-Leader Associates ministry.

To use the Cross as a symbol representing an intentional Christian lay ministry is, perhaps, not surprising. It does, however, represent for me an active witness to the gift of the Christian revelation to all my clients, be they for-profit or not-for-profit, religious or secular. It also symbolizes how absolute love has overcome absolute evil, how the non-violence of Jesus has overcome the violence of the world. I hope Servant-Leader Associates does its work in and from this new reality.

The Möbius Strip is surface that can be formed by taking a long, rectangular strip of paper, rotating the ends 180° with respect to one another, and joining the ends together to form a loop. The Möbius strip is a two-dimensional surface that has only one side. This is a very powerful symbol. First, this band represents the uniqueness of God's Spirit and the human spirit (two dimensions) and yet their beautiful integration (only one side). Placing the strip on the Cross reminds me that at the crucifixion of Jesus, the temple veil was torn and God's Spirit was newly available to God's whole creation. Finally, the strip also represents the uniqueness and yet indivisibility of serving and leading: servant-leadership.
